By Public Transport
There are buses to Youlgreave, Middleton by Youlgreave and
Elton from Matlock and/or Bakewell. The nearest railway station
is Matlock (4 miles), branch line from Derby. The nearest main
line railway station is Chesterfield (17 miles). We can organise
pick up from any of these places.
From the Motorway
The nearest motorway is the M1. From the South use Junction
28 and follow signs for Matlock. From the North use Junction
29 (not Junction 30) and follow signs for Chesterfield and
then Matlock.
By Road
The Cheese Factory (Grid 209616) is at the junction of 3 small
lanes in the bottom of Gratton valley. Each lane is single
track, twisting and steep. Find the correct lane from a nearby
village (see below) and then keep straight on:
From Matlock; A6 North towards Bakewell to Darley Dale. B5057
left. Always straight on through Darley Bridge, Wensley, Winster,
straight across B5056, to Elton. From Elton, 1.0 Miles. With
the church on your RHS and pub on your LHS, go straight out
of Elton. Ignore the right turn to Alport. Go straight on steeply
down, past Dale End (telephone box) then 300 yards to the junction.
From Bakewell; A6 South towards Matlock. Just past Haddon Hall
turn right B5056. At Hawley’s Bridge where B5056
goes left towards Ashbourne, keep straight on to Youlgreave.
From Youlgreave, 2.0 Miles. By the church, go down Bradford
Road. After crossing the River Bradford go steeply up and over
Mawstone Lane. After the hairpin bend, go steeply down to the
junction.
From Buxton; A515 South towards Ashbourne. At Newhaven turn left
A5012 towards Cromford. Immediate left towards Youlgreave
and then first right to Middleton by Youlgreave. From Middleton
by Youlgreave, 1.8 Miles. Leave the “Square” with
the War Memorial Gardens and Play Park on your RHS and then
the small church (not the old chapel) on your LHS. Past 2 farms
at Smerrill. Up and then steeply down to the junction.
From Ashbourne; A515 North towards Buxton. Fork right on B5056
towards Bakewell. Straight across A5012. Continue on B5056
towards Bakewell. At the top of a hill look for small sign
left (and then right) to Elton. From Elton, 1.0 Miles. With
the church on your RHS and pub on your LHS, go straight out
of Elton. Ignore the right turn to Alport. Go straight on steeply
down, past Dale End (telephone box) then 300 yards to the junction.
